My review of

A Biblical Portrait of Marriage

by Dr. Bruce H. Wilkinson

Week One:

Leaving

The Role of the Couple

What are the secrets to a happy marriage (Genesis 2:24)?

1. Therefore a man shall LEAVE his father and mother,

2. And CLEAVE to his wife,

3. And they shall become ONE FLESH.

What are the basic reasons why people don’t leave?

1. PERSONAL problem

2. PARENTAL problem

my notes: security in parent’s home, parental control-”sweet manipulation”

How is the word “leave” defined in the Hebrew language (the language in which the Old Testament was written)?

1. To LOOSEN

2. To DEPART

3. To ABANDON

my notes: Ask for their blessing on your marriage, Never encourage them to sin with you

In what ways should the husband and wife leave?

1. Leave PHYSICALLY

2. Leave FINANCIALLY

3. Leave EMOTIONALLY

my notes: Parents, don’t buy large gifts for child or grandchildren-then the husband/father can not be the husband/father of the household. How can he compare to the large gifts and money that the parents give?

Discussion Questions:

1. Which do you think is the greatest problem in most marriages-leaving or cleaving?

2. How do some parents make it very difficult for their children to leave? What kinds of statements and actions are used by parents to “manipulate” a young couple to keep them from leaving completely?

3. How would you describe men or women who are still to strongly attached to their parents? How does a husband or wife feel if the spouse’s loyalty is divided?

4. What kinds of activities or communication can be appropriate between a new couple and their parents? When can such activities be detrimental to the leaving process?

5. What could parents do that would enable the new couple to leave with joy and freedom? What steps could a new couple take to ensure that leaving is complete?
